Practice prompt

Thank-You Email for Professional Help

A colleague helped you solve an urgent problem at work. Write an email thanking them, explain how their help affected the outcome and offer to return the favour.

A strong response plan

  1. 1Thank the person specifically
  2. 2Describe what they did
  3. 3Explain the positive result
  4. 4Offer a concrete way to help in return

Sample answer

Study the organization, not the script

Hi Marcus, Thank you for staying late yesterday to help me troubleshoot the inventory report before the client deadline. I was having trouble identifying why several totals did not match, and your suggestion to check the imported date range immediately exposed the problem. Because we corrected the report before sending it, the client received accurate figures on time and our team avoided having to issue a revised version this morning. I especially appreciate that you helped even though the issue was outside your assigned work. Please let me know if I can return the favour on your next project or cover one of your reporting tasks when your schedule is busy. Thanks again, Jordan

What to notice

Name the help rather than using generic thanks

Explain the outcome

Offer a realistic reciprocal action
