The four parts reward different reading behaviours. Correspondence requires you to follow purpose and detail; Apply a Diagram requires exact matching between visual and written constraints; Information rewards paragraph mapping and evidence location; Viewpoints requires careful tracking of opinions and implied attitudes. A single generic reading strategy is not enough.

Part 2 has eight scored questions. The key is not to “read harder”; it is to match a written requirement to the exact visual condition that proves or eliminates an option. Diagram tasks can involve schedules, notices, charts, maps, brochures or other practical visual information. Treat the visual as structured data: first identify what each row, column, symbol, label or note means, then apply the question’s constraints one by one.
A repeatable diagram routine
- Read the title to identify what the visual represents.
- Scan labels, legends, units, dates and footnotes before answering.
- Underline the question’s constraints: time, price, location, eligibility, exception or preference.
- Find the exact visual cell or section that satisfies every constraint.
- Reject options that match only one condition while violating another.
Common Part 2 traps
- • Choosing an option because it repeats a familiar word.
- • Ignoring a footnote, exception or “only” condition.
- • Reading the accompanying message but barely checking the visual.
- • Matching the right category but the wrong date, time or eligibility rule.
- • Assuming information that is not actually shown.
How to review CELPIP Reading answers
A score by itself is not enough. After a timed set, revisit every wrong answer and every answer you guessed. Find the exact sentence, paragraph, visual condition or viewpoint that supports the correct option. Then classify why you missed it: paraphrase, vocabulary, inference, diagram condition, paragraph mapping, viewpoint confusion or time pressure. Your next practice session should target the repeated error category.

Build a complete Reading study loop
Start with one realistic diagnostic. If one part is clearly weaker, practise that part separately until the same mistake pattern becomes less frequent. Then return to a full Reading simulation to confirm that the improvement survives time pressure. If your target is Level 9, combine task-level practice with the dedicated improvement plan rather than doing random full tests every day.
