CELPIP Speaking questions, plans and sample answers

Task 1Giving Advice

Practice prompt

A friend has accepted a new job but is worried about a long commute. Give your friend advice.

Response plan

Recommendation → reason → practical example → second option → supportive close

Original sample answer

If I were in your position, I would try the commute for a week before making a final decision. That would give you a realistic idea of the travel time during rush hour. You could also ask your employer whether your start time can be shifted slightly, because even thirty minutes may reduce traffic significantly. If the commute still feels exhausting after a trial period, then I would compare the cost of moving closer with the time and fuel you are spending now. The job sounds like a good opportunity, so I would test a few practical solutions before giving it up.

Task 2Talking about a Personal Experience

Practice prompt

Talk about a time when you solved an unexpected problem.

Response plan

Set the scene → problem → action → result → why it mattered

Original sample answer

Last winter, I was driving to work when my car would not start in a grocery-store parking lot. I had an early shift, so at first I was stressed that I would be late. I called a coworker to explain the situation, then asked the store's customer-service desk whether anyone had booster cables. An employee helped me find another driver who could give the battery a boost, and the car started within a few minutes. I still arrived slightly late, but I learned to keep booster cables in my trunk and to stay calm enough to solve one problem at a time.

Task 3Describing a Scene

Practice prompt

Describe a busy community park to someone who cannot see it.

Response plan

Overall setting → foreground → background → people/actions → notable detail

Original sample answer

The park looks very busy and cheerful. In the foreground, a family is sitting on a picnic blanket while two children are playing with a ball nearby. On the left, a cyclist is slowing down because several people are crossing the path. Farther back, I can see a small food stand with a line of customers waiting beside it. Near the playground, one child is climbing while another is coming down the slide. What stands out most is how many different activities are happening at the same time, but the atmosphere still seems relaxed and friendly.

Task 4Making Predictions

Practice prompt

Look at a scene where dark clouds are moving over an outdoor event. Predict what will happen next.

Response plan

Prediction → visible evidence → likely result → second prediction

Original sample answer

Based on what I can see, I think the event organizers will start moving equipment under the tents very soon. The sky is getting dark and several people are already looking upward, so heavy rain is probably approaching. I would not be surprised if the families near the open field begin packing their bags and heading toward the parking lot. If the weather continues to get worse, the organizers may pause the activities completely until the storm passes. The people closest to the tents will probably stay longer because they have some shelter.

Task 5Comparing and Persuading

Practice prompt

Persuade a friend to choose a smaller apartment near work instead of a larger apartment farther away.

Response plan

State choice → compare → benefit 1 → benefit 2 → persuade

Original sample answer

I would choose the smaller apartment near your workplace. The larger place gives you more space, but you would spend much more time commuting every day. With the closer apartment, you could walk or take a short bus ride, which would save money on transportation and give you more free time in the evening. It is also in an area with grocery stores and a gym nearby, so the smaller size is partly balanced by better convenience. Since you live alone and work long hours, I think location will improve your daily routine more than an extra bedroom would.

Task 6Dealing with a Difficult Situation

Practice prompt

A neighbour regularly plays loud music late at night. Explain the problem and suggest a solution.

Response plan

Acknowledge → explain impact → clear request → practical compromise → close

Original sample answer

Hi, I wanted to talk to you about the music at night. I completely understand that you want to relax and enjoy your home, but the volume has been quite high after 11 p.m. this week, and it has been difficult for me to sleep before work. Would you mind lowering the music after 10:30, especially on weekdays? I do not expect complete silence, and I am happy to be flexible on weekends when I do not have an early shift. I wanted to speak with you directly because I think we can solve this easily without making it a bigger issue.

Task 7Expressing Opinions

Practice prompt

Should cities invest more money in public transportation? Explain your opinion.

Response plan

Position → reason 1 + example → reason 2 + example → conclusion

Original sample answer

I strongly believe cities should invest more in public transportation. First, reliable transit gives people a realistic alternative to driving, which can reduce traffic congestion during rush hour. For example, a commuter is more likely to leave the car at home if buses or trains arrive frequently and connect directly to major employment areas. Second, better transit improves access for students, seniors and workers who cannot afford a vehicle. It can also make neighbourhoods more attractive for businesses because customers and employees can reach them more easily. For these reasons, transportation funding benefits both individual residents and the wider city.

Task 8Describing an Unusual Situation

Practice prompt

You see people walking through a shopping centre wearing matching animal costumes. Describe the situation to a friend on the phone.

Response plan

Role-play opening → location → unusual feature → details → reaction

Original sample answer

Hi Sam, you will not believe what I am looking at right now. I am at the shopping centre, and a huge group of people is walking through the main hallway dressed in matching animal costumes. Some of them look like giant bears, while others are wearing bright bird costumes with enormous wings. They are moving in a line and waving at shoppers, so I think it might be part of a promotional event or a charity parade. Everyone around me has stopped to take photos, and even the security staff are smiling. It is such a strange but funny scene that I had to call you and describe it.

CELPIP Speaking sample-answer FAQ

Can I memorize CELPIP Speaking sample answers?

Use sample answers to study organization, development and language choices, not as scripts. A memorized response can become irrelevant when the live prompt changes, so practise transferring the same communication framework to fresh topics.

How many tasks are in CELPIP Speaking?

The current CELPIP-General Speaking component has one practice task followed by eight scored task types. The official CELPIP Test Format page is the source of truth for current timing and structure.

What makes a strong CELPIP Speaking answer?

CELPIP publishes four Speaking performance dimensions: Content/Coherence, Vocabulary, Listenability and Task Fulfillment. Strong practice responses should be relevant, developed, understandable, appropriately worded and complete for the task.

Are these official CELPIP sample answers?

No. The prompts and answers on this page are original MyCELPIP teaching examples. MyCELPIP is independent and is not affiliated with or endorsed by CELPIP, Paragon Testing Enterprises or Prometric.
