The current official CELPIP-General format lists Speaking as 15 minutes with a practice task followed by eight scored tasks. The task-by-task timing table below is based on CELPIP's revised 2026 Speaking Pro: Target 9+ study pack. Verify the latest structure on the official CELPIP Test Format page and the 2026 Speaking Pro study pack.
Official 2026 task timing
Tasks 1 and 7 are the longest recorded responses at 90 seconds. Most other recorded tasks are 60 seconds. Task 5 is different because you first choose between options in Part 1, then receive a separate preparation period before the recorded persuasion response in Part 2.
| Task | Task type | Preparation | Speaking |
|---|---|---|---|
| Task 1 | Giving Advice | 30 sec | 90 sec |
| Task 2 | Talking about a Personal Experience | 30 sec | 60 sec |
| Task 3 | Describing a Scene | 30 sec | 60 sec |
| Task 4 | Making Predictions | 30 sec | 60 sec |
| Task 5 | Comparing and Persuading | 60 sec Part 1 + 60 sec Part 2 | 60 sec Part 2 |
| Task 6 | Dealing with a Difficult Situation | 60 sec | 60 sec |
| Task 7 | Expressing Opinions | 30 sec | 90 sec |
| Task 8 | Describing an Unusual Situation | 30 sec | 60 sec |
Task 5 Part 1 is selection only, so there is no recorded speaking response in Part 1. CELPIP's 2026 study pack lists 60 seconds for Part 1 selection, then 60 seconds preparation and 60 seconds speaking for Part 2.
Full task sequence
A useful mock should make you switch communication goals repeatedly. That is different from answering ten opinion prompts in a row: CELPIP requires advice, storytelling, visual description, prediction, persuasion, conflict handling, opinion development and unusual-scene description.
Task 1 · 30 sec prep · 90 sec speaking
Give practical advice and support it with clear reasons.
Task 2 · 30 sec prep · 60 sec speaking
Tell a focused past experience with a clear sequence and outcome.
Task 3 · 30 sec prep · 60 sec speaking
Build a clear mental picture using organized, specific details.
Task 4 · 30 sec prep · 60 sec speaking
Make logical predictions and connect them to visible evidence.
Task 5 · 60 sec Part 1 + 60 sec Part 2 prep · 60 sec Part 2 speaking
Choose between options first, then persuade the listener by comparing your choice with another option.
Task 6 · 60 sec prep · 60 sec speaking
Handle a problem clearly while keeping an appropriate interpersonal tone.
Task 7 · 30 sec prep · 90 sec speaking
State a position and develop it with reasons and concrete support.
Task 8 · 30 sec prep · 60 sec speaking
Explain an unusual visual situation clearly to someone who cannot see it.
Do not judge a recording only by whether it sounded fluent. Official CELPIP Speaking performance standards use four broad dimensions: Content/Coherence, Vocabulary, Listenability and Task Fulfillment. Use those dimensions as a diagnostic map, while remembering that MyCELPIP practice feedback is not an official CELPIP score.
Did the answer contain enough relevant ideas, details and a clear progression?
Were words precise, varied and natural for the situation?
Was the response easy to follow in rhythm, fluency, pronunciation and sentence flow?
Did you complete the communication job, use an appropriate tone and address the prompt fully?
Repeat one task type when you keep running out of ideas, missing the listener, using the wrong tone or losing organization. Build the skill first, then check whether it transfers to a fresh prompt.
Open Speaking practice →Run the complete sequence when you need to test task switching, microphone comfort, sustained concentration and whether your response frameworks still work under pressure.
Open full mock tests →The current official CELPIP-General test format lists Speaking as a 15-minute component with a practice task followed by eight scored speaking tasks.
In CELPIP's 2026 Speaking Pro: Target 9+ study pack, Tasks 2, 3, 4, 6 and 8 have 60-second recorded responses, while Tasks 1 and 7 have 90-second responses. Task 5 uses a two-part comparison workflow: 60 seconds to choose in Part 1, then 60 seconds to prepare and 60 seconds to speak in Part 2.
CELPIP-General Speaking has eight scored task types: Giving Advice, Talking about a Personal Experience, Describing a Scene, Making Predictions, Comparing and Persuading, Dealing with a Difficult Situation, Expressing Opinions, and Describing an Unusual Situation.
Official CELPIP performance standards organize Speaking assessment around Content/Coherence, Vocabulary, Listenability and Task Fulfillment. Practice feedback should help you diagnose these areas rather than reduce speaking quality to a single grammar score.
Use sample responses to study organization, specificity, vocabulary and task fulfillment, but build fresh answers to new prompts. Flexible response frameworks are more useful than memorizing complete scripts.
Use task-specific practice to repair a repeated weakness, then use a full eight-task mock to test whether the improvement holds while you switch tasks and speak continuously under time pressure.
