CELPIP Speaking Templates 2026: All 8 Tasks

By MyCELPIP Editorial Team · Updated September 9, 2026

CELPIP Speaking templates — quick answer: use flexible frameworks to organize each task, not one memorized script for all eight. A framework should protect the sequence of ideas while allowing the vocabulary, examples, listener relationship and tone to change with every prompt.

CELPIP-General currently has eight Speaking task types in a 15-minute Speaking component. The published Speaking performance dimensions are Content/Coherence, Vocabulary, Listenability and Task Fulfillment. Check the current CELPIP Test Format and CELPIP Results performance standards before relying on any preparation guide.

Why one universal speaking script does not work

The eight tasks ask you to do different communication jobs. Giving advice requires direct recommendations to a person. Describing a scene requires organized visual detail. Comparing and Persuading requires a choice and convincing benefits. A difficult situation requires tact. Expressing an opinion requires a supported position.

A fixed opening such as “Nowadays, this is a controversial topic…” may sound unnatural when the task is to advise a friend or describe a picture. The safest template is therefore a sequence of idea jobs, not a paragraph of memorized sentences.

Task 1 template: Giving Advice

Framework:

  1. Direct recommendation.
  2. First reason.
  3. Practical detail or example.
  4. Second recommendation/reason.
  5. Supportive closing.

Flexible language functions: “I would suggest…”, “The main reason is…”, “That would help because…”, “Another thing you could do is…”, “Whichever option you choose…”

Original outline example: A friend is deciding whether to buy a used car or continue using public transit.

  • Recommendation: continue transit for three months before buying.
  • Reason 1: avoid immediate insurance/repair costs.
  • Detail: save a fixed amount monthly to test whether the car budget is comfortable.
  • Reason 2: identify the trips where transit is genuinely inconvenient.
  • Close: reconsider the purchase with real cost and travel evidence.

The framework remains useful even when the topic changes completely.

Task 2 template: Talking about a Personal Experience

Framework:

  1. Set the time/place.
  2. Explain what started the event.
  3. Describe two or three important actions in sequence.
  4. Add one specific feeling/detail.
  5. Finish with outcome or lesson.

Useful sequencing language: “A few years ago…”, “At first…”, “A little later…”, “What surprised me was…”, “In the end…”

Avoid spending twenty seconds introducing the story. The listener needs a complete event, not a long background paragraph.

Task 3 template: Describing a Scene

Framework:

  1. Overall location and activity.
  2. Foreground or central action.
  3. Left/right or middle details.
  4. Background action.
  5. One notable interaction or visual detail.

Spatial language: “In the foreground…”, “Near the centre…”, “To the left…”, “Behind them…”, “Farther back…”

This structure prevents a disconnected inventory of objects.

Task 4 template: Making Predictions

Framework:

  1. State first prediction.
  2. Connect it to visible evidence.
  3. Explain likely result.
  4. State second prediction.
  5. Connect to another clue and conclude.

Probability language: “is likely to,” “will probably,” “may,” “looks as though,” “I expect that.”

Do not invent a complicated story that has no connection to the scene. Prediction quality comes from the evidence-to-result link.

Task 5 template: Comparing and Persuading

Framework:

  1. State your chosen option quickly.
  2. Compare the first decision factor.
  3. Explain the benefit to the listener.
  4. Compare a second factor.
  5. Address a reasonable concern if useful.
  6. Recommend the option directly.

Original outline example: Persuade a sibling to choose a train trip instead of driving.

  • Choice: train.
  • Factor 1: no need to drive for several hours.
  • Benefit: arrive less tired and use travel time to rest.
  • Factor 2: downtown arrival avoids parking cost.
  • Concern: less schedule flexibility, but advance planning handles it.
  • Close: choose the train for the easier weekend.

Persuasion becomes stronger when each comparison is connected to what the listener values.

Task 6 template: Dealing with a Difficult Situation

Framework:

  1. Acknowledge the person/situation politely.
  2. State the problem clearly.
  3. Explain the impact.
  4. Propose a practical solution or compromise.
  5. Close respectfully but clearly.

Tone functions: “I wanted to speak with you about…”, “The difficulty is…”, “Would it be possible to…”, “I think this would be fair because…”, “I hope we can solve this…”

Avoid becoming so polite that your position disappears. Task fulfillment still requires a clear response to the problem.

Task 7 template: Expressing Opinions

Framework:

  1. State a clear opinion.
  2. Reason 1.
  3. Concrete example/consequence.
  4. Reason 2.
  5. Concrete example/comparison.
  6. Conclusion.

Original outline example: Should workplaces provide flexible start times?

  • Opinion: yes, when operations allow it.
  • Reason 1: workers can avoid peak commuting periods.
  • Example: arriving at 7:30 instead of 9:00 can reduce travel stress.
  • Reason 2: parents can coordinate school schedules more effectively.
  • Qualification: teams still need agreed overlap hours.
  • Conclusion: flexibility with clear rules benefits both sides.

Task 8 template: Describing an Unusual Situation

Framework:

  1. Identify where you are and why you are calling/telling the listener.
  2. Name the unusual main subject.
  3. Describe its size, position, appearance or action.
  4. Add surrounding people/objects for context.
  5. Clarify why the situation is unusual.

Precise nouns and location language are especially valuable because the listener may need to imagine the scene without seeing it.

Three template rules that protect natural speech

1. Memorize functions, not sentences

Remember “state opinion” rather than “I strongly believe that in this modern era…” A function can be expressed naturally in many ways.

2. Keep space for prompt-specific detail

A useful framework should leave most of the response available for reasons, examples, visual evidence and listener-specific benefits. If half your answer is reusable filler, the template is too rigid.

3. Change tone with the listener

Advice to a close friend, persuasion of a family member and a complaint to a service manager should not sound identical. Task Fulfillment includes whether the response actually fits the situation.

Common template failures

  • Using the same introduction for all eight tasks.
  • Memorizing vocabulary that is too formal for everyday conversation.
  • Forcing an unrelated personal story into a prompt.
  • Spending so long on the opening that the final reason or conclusion is incomplete.
  • Treating transition words as a checklist and repeating “firstly, secondly, moreover” mechanically.
  • Ignoring evidence in visual description and prediction tasks.
  • Giving a framework without practising it under the real timer.

How to practise a template until it becomes flexible

  1. Choose one task and write only the framework headings.
  2. Answer three very different prompts using the same headings.
  3. Record each response without reading full sentences from notes.
  4. Compare whether the answers still sound natural and prompt-specific.
  5. Remove any memorized phrase that appears even when it does not fit.
  6. Repeat with realistic preparation and response timing.

Frequently asked questions

Is there an official CELPIP Speaking template?

CELPIP publishes task formats, preparation resources and performance standards, not one mandatory script that candidates must follow. Use frameworks as preparation tools rather than claiming they are official formulas.

Can a template guarantee CELPIP Level 9 or 10?

No. A framework can improve organization, but official performance also depends on the quality and relevance of ideas, vocabulary, listenability and task fulfillment across the actual response.

Should I memorize opening and closing sentences?

A few natural language functions can be useful, but they should adapt to the prompt and listener. Avoid long canned openings and closings that consume time without adding task-specific meaning.

How do I know if my template is too rigid?

If you keep saying the same sentences across unrelated prompts, struggle to change tone, or spend more time recalling the script than responding to the situation, simplify it to idea headings.
