CELPIP Reading Part 1: Correspondence Strategy

CELPIP Reading Part 1 is Reading Correspondence. In the current CELPIP format, Part 1 contains 11 questions. The official 2026 Reading Pro study pack suggests approximately 11 minutes for this part, divided into two question sets of 6 + 5.

The main text is typically an email from one community member to another about an everyday social or work situation. A second short response to that message contains blanks that you complete by selecting answers.

Quick strategy: identify the writer, recipient, purpose, and any request first. Then read the questions for keywords, locate the relevant section, and expect the correct answer to paraphrase rather than copy the wording of the email.

The full CELPIP Reading component currently takes 43–56 minutes and contains 38 scored questions across four parts. Reading may also include unscored test-development content that looks like normal scored material, so apply full effort throughout.

You can verify the current format on the official CELPIP-General page and the official 2026 Reading Pro Study Pack.

CELPIP Reading Part 1 format

According to the current Reading Pro material:

• Part: Reading Correspondence
• Questions: 11 total
• Question sets: 6 + 5
• Approximate timing: 11 minutes
• Main text: an everyday email
• Second text: a short response with blanks
• Typical tone: conversational, social, friendly, or familiar without extreme informality

Possible situations include community activities, customer requests, volunteering, workplace arrangements, or travel planning.

What Part 1 actually tests

Part 1 is not simply a vocabulary fill-in exercise. You need several reading skills working together.

Writer, recipient, and purpose

Before looking at details, know who is communicating with whom and why. That context helps you interpret tone, implied meaning, and the writer's request.

Ask:

• Who wrote the email?
• Who receives it?
• What is the main purpose?
• Is the writer requesting something?
• What is the relationship between the people?

Specific information

Some questions ask for a detail that appears directly in the text. Use keywords to locate the relevant sentence rather than rereading the entire email.

General meaning

Other questions require the purpose or main idea of a larger section. Do not choose an answer based on one isolated phrase if the paragraph as a whole means something different.

Inference and tone

The text may imply how the writer feels or what they will probably do. Look at word choice, context, and the relationship between the people.

Paraphrase

The official Reading Pro guide warns candidates not to expect the correct answer in exactly the same words as the passage. CELPIP frequently expresses the same idea with different wording.

For example:

Email: “Please let me know by Friday if you can attend.”
Question idea: The writer wants a response before the end of the workweek.

The meaning matches even though the wording changes.

An 11-minute Part 1 plan

The official Reading Pro pack suggests a detailed timing sequence. Treat these as approximate practice targets rather than a guarantee that every live test screen will behave identically.

First 30 seconds — preview the message

Identify:

• writer;
• recipient;
• purpose;
• whether the writer asks for something.

Do not try to memorize every detail.

Next 1.5 minutes — preview Question Set 1

Look for helpful keywords such as:

• names;
• dates;
• locations;
• unusual nouns;
• quoted words;
• specialized terms.

These can help you find the relevant section quickly.

About 4 minutes — answer Question Set 1

For each question:

1. identify the keyword or concept;
2. locate the relevant part of the email;
3. read that section carefully;
4. compare meaning, not just identical words;
5. choose the best answer.

About 4.5 minutes — answer Question Set 2

Use the first email as context for the short response. Ask who is replying, what they understood, and which completion fits both the meaning and the relationship.

Final 30 seconds — review

Make sure every question has an answer. Official CELPIP materials state there is no penalty for an incorrect Reading answer, so leaving a question blank has no advantage.

Original mini-example

Imagine this email:

Hi Lena,
Thanks for volunteering at Saturday's neighbourhood garden event. We originally planned to begin at 9 a.m., but the soil delivery will not arrive until 10. Could you come at 10:30 instead? Please bring gardening gloves if you have them. We have tools, water, and lunch for everyone.
— Marcus

Question: Why did Marcus change the start time?

A. Too few volunteers registered.
B. The gardening equipment is unavailable.
C. A required delivery will arrive later than expected.
D. Lunch will be served at a different time.

Best answer: C.

The email says the soil delivery will not arrive until 10. The answer paraphrases that as a required delivery arriving later than expected.

Question: What should Lena supply herself if possible?

A. Food
B. Water
C. Tools
D. Gloves

Best answer: D.

The text states that tools, water, and lunch are provided, while Lena is asked to bring gardening gloves if she has them.

The most useful Part 1 reading habits

Read for relationships, not isolated words

If a question asks why something happened, find the cause-and-effect relationship. Matching one shared noun is not enough.

Watch pronouns

Words such as he, she, they, this, that, it, these can refer back to information from the previous sentence. Make sure you know the reference before choosing an answer.

Use tone as evidence

Friendly phrases, apologies, requests, and thanks reveal the writer's attitude and relationship with the recipient.

Distinguish request from information

An email can contain several facts but only one actual request. Look for expressions such as:

• could you…
• please…
• would you mind…
• let me know…
• I was hoping you could…

Common Part 1 mistakes

1. Reading every word slowly before looking at the questions

Part 1 rewards purposeful reading. Preview the communication context, then use questions to direct your attention.

2. Choosing an answer because it repeats a word from the email

Correct answers are often paraphrases. A distractor may repeat the same noun while changing the meaning.

3. Ignoring who wrote the second message

Question Set 2 depends on understanding the relationship between the original email and the reply.

4. Confusing purpose with topic

An email may be about a volunteer event, but its purpose may be to change the meeting time.

5. Overthinking conversational language

Part 1 is generally everyday correspondence. Interpret normal social/work communication rather than searching for hidden academic meaning.

How to practice Part 1 effectively

Session 1: untimed accuracy

Work through correspondence questions without a timer. For every wrong answer, write the exact sentence that proves the correct answer.

Session 2: paraphrase training

Take five sentences from an email and rewrite each one in different words without changing the meaning.

Session 3: keyword scanning

Give yourself 20–30 seconds to find a name, date, place, request, or reason in a long email.

Session 4: timed 11-question set

Use approximately 11 minutes and follow the official preview → question → answer → review sequence.

Session 5: error classification

Label each mistake:

• missed detail;
• misunderstood paraphrase;
• inference;
• tone;
• time pressure;
• vocabulary.

Your largest category tells you what to practice next.

Part 1 checklist

Before leaving the section, ask:

• Do I know the writer and recipient?
• Did I understand the purpose?
• Did I locate evidence for each answer?
• Did I watch for paraphrases?
• Did I answer all 11 questions?
