Practice prompt

Park Improvements vs Indoor Community Centre

Your city has funding for either major improvements to a public park or a new indoor community centre. Which should it choose?

A strong response plan

  1. 1State the preferred project
  2. 2Explain who benefits
  3. 3Discuss year-round or long-term value
  4. 4Conclude with the stronger public benefit

Sample answer

Study the organization, not the script

I would support building the indoor community centre. Improving the park would make the neighbourhood more attractive, but an indoor facility could serve residents throughout the entire year. The centre could provide exercise classes, study rooms, youth programs and meeting space for seniors. These services would be available even during winter or bad weather, when the park is used much less. In addition, one building can support many age groups at different times of day. For example, children could attend after-school programs while adults use fitness rooms in the evening. A better park would certainly be enjoyable, but the community centre would provide a wider range of practical services and would therefore be the stronger long-term investment.
