CELPIP Reading Practice Test 2026: 4-Part Review
By MyCELPIP Editorial Team · Updated September 9, 2026
CELPIP Reading practice test — quick answer: a useful full Reading simulation should cover the current four scored parts under one realistic timer, use material you have not memorized, and be reviewed by part + error type, not only by total correct answers. The current CELPIP-General Reading component is 43–56 minutes. Its four scored parts list 11 + 8 + 9 + 10 = 38 scored questions, and CELPIP warns that unscored development items may also appear.
Verify the live structure on the official CELPIP Test Format page. MyCELPIP practice content is original preparation material and is not copied from official CELPIP questions.
What a full Reading practice test should measure
A full Reading test is different from a ten-question drill. It should tell you whether your reading process still works when you must move through four different task styles without resetting your concentration.
A good simulation measures at least four things:
- Accuracy — how many answers are supported by the text or diagram.
- Evidence quality — whether you can identify why the correct option is correct.
- Time control — whether one difficult item steals time from easier later questions.
- Part transitions — whether performance falls when you switch from correspondence to diagram reading, information retrieval and viewpoints.
If you finish with only one total score, you are throwing away most of the diagnostic value.
Current CELPIP Reading structure
| Part | Current official name | Scored questions listed |
|---|---|---|
| 1 | Reading Correspondence | 11 |
| 2 | Reading to Apply a Diagram | 8 |
| 3 | Reading for Information | 9 |
| 4 | Reading for Viewpoints | 10 |
| Total scored parts | 38 |
CELPIP states that Reading may also include unscored test-development items that look like scored items. You cannot identify which items are unscored, so your practice habit should be to treat every question seriously.
Before you start the simulation
Set up the test so the result actually means something.
- Use a laptop or desktop if possible.
- Use fresh material.
- Remove answer keys, explanations and notes from view.
- Use one overall Reading timer rather than pausing after every question.
- Do not search vocabulary during the test.
- Do not restart a part because the first few questions felt difficult.
- Record only the final answers and any small confidence markers you normally use.
If you stop the timer repeatedly, the session becomes learning practice rather than a simulation. Learning practice is useful, but it answers a different question.
A practical pacing framework
CELPIP publishes the overall Reading time, not an official required minute-by-minute budget for each part. The following is therefore a practice framework, not an official CELPIP timing rule.
Use a first simulation to discover your natural pattern. For example:
| Part | Practice goal |
|---|---|
| Part 1 | establish rhythm; avoid rereading the whole message for every question |
| Part 2 | slow down enough to verify diagram conditions and labels |
| Part 3 | map paragraph purpose before chasing details |
| Part 4 | protect enough time for viewpoint attribution and inference |
If Part 2 always takes much longer than the others, do not simply force yourself to read faster. Diagnose why: labels, conditions, switching between text and diagram, or uncertainty about paraphrases.
Part 1: Reading Correspondence
Part 1 is a useful place to build confidence, but easy-looking correspondence can still contain traps.
During review, check whether you confused:
- sender purpose;
- sequence of events;
- implied request;
- tone;
- pronoun/reference words;
- a detail mentioned earlier but changed later.
A strong evidence note might look like:
Q4 → paragraph 3, “instead of Friday” = schedule changed to Thursday.
That is more useful than writing “careless mistake.”
Use the dedicated Reading Part 1 guide for focused repair.
Part 2: Reading to Apply a Diagram
Part 2 rewards precise condition checking. A choice may sound attractive but fail one small requirement in the diagram, schedule, map, advertisement or notice.
Before answering, identify:
- the user's need;
- mandatory conditions;
- optional preferences;
- exclusions;
- dates/times/prices/locations;
- whether all conditions must be satisfied together.
Original teaching example
Suppose a fictional class schedule says:
- Workshop A: Tuesday, $45, beginner
- Workshop B: Thursday, $55, beginner
- Workshop C: Thursday, $45, advanced
The reader wants Thursday + beginner + no more than $50.
Workshop B matches the day and level but fails the budget. Workshop C matches day and budget but fails the level. The correct reasoning is not “which option looks closest?” but “which option satisfies every required condition?”
This is an original teaching example, not an official CELPIP question.
Part 3: Reading for Information
Part 3 becomes easier when you stop treating the passage as one long block.
During the first pass, map each paragraph to a short function such as:
- origin/history;
- problem;
- research finding;
- example;
- benefit;
- limitation.
Then when the question asks about a limitation, you know where to search.
After the test, classify misses as:
- wrong paragraph;
- missed paraphrase;
- vocabulary in context;
- unsupported inference;
- time-pressure guess.
Use the Part 3 information-retrieval guide.
Part 4: Reading for Viewpoints
Part 4 often becomes difficult because the reader remembers the topic but forgets who holds which opinion.
Create a compact map:
| Speaker/source | Position | Main reason |
|---|---|---|
| A | supports | convenience |
| B | opposes | cost |
| C | mixed | good idea, poor timing |
Then verify whether a question asks for:
- a stated viewpoint;
- agreement/disagreement;
- reason for the viewpoint;
- inference supported by that viewpoint.
Do not assign one person's criticism to another speaker simply because they discuss the same topic.
Use the Reading Part 4 viewpoints guide.
The evidence-first answer rule
For every difficult question, use this sequence:
- Decode exactly what the question asks.
- Locate the relevant evidence.
- Match the option to the meaning, not just repeated words.
- Eliminate options that are contradicted, too broad, too narrow or unsupported.
A repeated word is not proof. CELPIP-style reading frequently relies on paraphrase.
Original paraphrase example
Passage: “The committee postponed the launch because several safety checks were incomplete.”
Question: Why did the committee delay the launch?
A good paraphrase is required inspections were not finished. An option containing the repeated word “launch” but giving the wrong reason is still wrong.
How to review the full test
Build a table like this:
| Question | Part | Correct? | Evidence | Distractor error | Repair |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| 6 | P1 | No | paragraph 2 | ignored schedule change | mark contrast/change words |
| 15 | P2 | No | diagram row 4 | missed price condition | list must-have conditions first |
| 25 | P3 | No | paragraph C | chose keyword match | paraphrase drill |
| 34 | P4 | No | speaker B | viewpoint ownership | speaker map |
This turns the test into a plan.
Use the official approximate score chart carefully
CELPIP currently publishes this approximate Reading relationship:
| CELPIP level | Approximate Reading score /38 |
|---|---|
| 10–12 | 33–38 |
| 9 | 31–33 |
| 8 | 28–31 |
| 7 | 24–28 |
| 6 | 19–25 |
| 5 | 15–20 |
| 4 | 10–16 |
| 3 | 8–11 |
| M | 0–7 |
The official CELPIP Results page explicitly says this chart is approximate because question difficulty and equating can vary. Notice that some ranges overlap. Do not convert one practice raw score into a guaranteed official level.
A better trend is:
fresh test accuracy + error type + timing + consistency across several attempts.
What to do after the test
If Part 1 is weakest
Drill correspondence purpose, sequence, tone and changed details.
If Part 2 is weakest
Practise condition matching. Write must-have conditions before looking at options.
If Part 3 is weakest
Practise paragraph mapping and paraphrase recognition.
If Part 4 is weakest
Practise speaker/viewpoint ownership and evidence-based inference.
If every part falls late in the test
The problem may be pacing or concentration rather than one question type. Use shorter mixed sets first, then rebuild full-test endurance.
A seven-day Reading recovery cycle
Day 1: full four-part diagnostic.
Day 2: review every miss; choose one dominant weakness.
Day 3: focused practice on that part/error type.
Day 4: fresh practice on the same weakness.
Day 5: second-highest weakness.
Day 6: mixed timed set.
Day 7: another full Reading simulation only if you changed something worth testing.
The goal is not “do seven tests in seven days.” It is “make one measurable process stronger, then verify it.”
Reading practice test vs full CELPIP mock
A Reading practice test isolates the Reading section so you can study accuracy and pacing in depth.
A full CELPIP mock checks whether Reading performance survives after or before other skills inside a longer exam-style experience.
Use Reading practice for section work and full mock tests for broader simulation.
Common mistakes
- Using the same familiar passage as a readiness test.
- Looking at answers before the full Reading timer ends.
- Recording only the total score.
- Treating repeated vocabulary as evidence.
- Ignoring diagram conditions.
- Forgetting which speaker owns a viewpoint.
- Converting one practice raw score into a guaranteed official level.
Frequently asked questions
How many scored questions are in CELPIP Reading?
The current four scored parts list 11, 8, 9 and 10 questions, totaling 38. Unscored development items may also appear.
How long is CELPIP Reading?
The current official time is 43–56 minutes.
Should I pause between parts during practice?
For a full simulation, no. For targeted learning drills, pausing is fine. Label the session correctly so you know what the result means.
Should I read the whole passage first?
There is no one rule for every part. Learn the structure, map useful information and protect enough time to verify evidence.
Can 33/38 guarantee CELPIP Level 10?
No. CELPIP publishes 33–38 as the approximate example range for Levels 10–12 in Reading, but explicitly says the raw score required for a level can vary slightly by test form.
Where should I practise next?
Start with CELPIP Reading practice, then use the dedicated part pages and a fresh full simulation when you are ready to verify improvement.
