CELPIP Email Examples 2026: Writing Task 1

By MyCELPIP Editorial Team · Updated September 4, 2026

CELPIP Email Writing examples — quick answer: Task 1 becomes easier to control when you identify four things before typing: recipient, purpose, required points and desired outcome. Then choose a tone that fits the relationship and build each paragraph around one clear job.

CELPIP-General Writing is currently 53 minutes for two tasks. CELPIP's published Writing scoring-level sample prompts use an approximate 150–200-word instruction, and its Writing performance standards evaluate Content/Coherence, Vocabulary, Readability and Task Fulfillment. Verify current guidance on the official CELPIP Test Format and CELPIP Results page.

The scenarios below are original MyCELPIP preparation examples, not official CELPIP questions.

A five-part Task 1 email framework

Greeting: match the relationship.
Opening purpose: tell the reader why you are writing.
Body 1: develop the first required point with a specific detail.
Body 2: develop remaining requirement(s), impact and/or solution.
Closing: state the request, next action, recommendation or thanks, then use an appropriate sign-off.

Do not treat this as a fixed script. Some prompts need three shorter body paragraphs; others work well with two. The prompt requirements matter more than a memorized layout.

Example 1: Complaint and solution request — full original response

Scenario: You ordered a desk from a local furniture store for a home office. Delivery arrived three days late and one drawer is damaged. Write to the store manager. Explain the problem, describe how it has affected you, and request a solution.

Recipient: store manager.

Purpose: report delivery/damage problem and obtain a practical remedy.

Tone: polite, specific and firm.

Sample response:

Dear Store Manager,

I am writing about order 4821, a home-office desk that was delivered to me on Friday. The delivery was originally scheduled for Tuesday, and when the desk finally arrived, the top drawer was cracked along one side and would not close properly.

The delay was inconvenient because I had arranged to work from home starting Wednesday and had already moved my previous desk out of the room. More importantly, I am concerned that the damaged drawer may worsen with regular use. I have photographs of the crack and can provide them with my order confirmation if needed.

Could you please arrange either a replacement drawer or an exchange for an undamaged desk? Because I already waited several extra days, I would appreciate a delivery appointment this week at no additional charge. Please let me know which option can be organized most quickly.

Thank you for your assistance. I look forward to resolving the issue soon.

Sincerely, Jordan Lee

Why this response is useful to study

The order and damage are identified immediately.
The writer explains two concrete effects rather than saying only “I am disappointed.”
The requested solution is specific but gives the manager two workable options.
The tone remains professional without sounding passive.

Example 2: Requesting a schedule change — annotated outline

Scenario: Your community course has moved from Saturday morning to Friday evening, which conflicts with your work schedule. Write to the program coordinator. Explain your situation, describe why you want to stay in the course, and suggest a solution.

Planning notes:

Greeting: Dear Program Coordinator,
Opening: registered for course; learned of schedule change.
Requirement 1: Friday shift ends after class begins.
Requirement 2: value course because it supports certification/career goal.
Solution: transfer to another section, attend remotely if available, or preserve fee as credit.
Close: ask which option can be approved.

Tone lesson: This is a request, not an angry complaint. The writer can explain the inconvenience clearly without blaming the coordinator personally.

Development lesson: “I cannot attend Fridays” is necessary but thin. Add why: shift schedule, commute or another fixed responsibility. One precise detail makes the situation credible and easier for the reader to act on.

Example 3: Informal invitation/help request — annotated outline

Scenario: You are organizing a small farewell gathering for a coworker. Write to a friend who knows the coworker well. Explain the plan, ask the friend to help with one part of the event, and suggest how you can coordinate.

Planning notes:

Greeting: Hi Maya,
Opening: farewell for Sam next Saturday.
Detail: location/time and small group.
Help request: create a short photo slideshow because Maya has older team pictures.
Coordination: send files by Wednesday; meet Thursday evening or use shared folder.
Close: friendly thanks and excitement.

Tone lesson: A friendly email should not sound like a formal complaint letter. Natural contractions and warm language can fit the recipient as long as the message remains clear.

Tone guide: formal, neutral and friendly

More formal/professional

Useful for a manager, landlord, service provider or organization when the relationship is not personal.

“I am writing to request…”
“Could you please confirm…”
“I would appreciate…”
“Thank you for your assistance.”

Neutral

Useful for a coordinator, colleague you do not know closely or routine service communication.

“I wanted to ask about…”
“Would it be possible to…”
“Please let me know if…”

Friendly/informal

Useful for a friend or familiar coworker when the prompt relationship supports it.

“I wanted to let you know…”
“Could you help me with…?”
“It would be great if…”
“Thanks so much.”

Do not force slang merely to sound informal. Clear, natural language is enough.

Six common Task 1 mistakes

Missing one prompt bullet

Before drafting, turn each instruction into a three-word note. Check each note before submitting.

Wrong tone

A sentence can be grammatically correct but still be inappropriate for the relationship. “You must fix this immediately” may be too aggressive in a routine request; “Maybe, if it isn't too much trouble…” may be too weak when a clear remedy is needed.

Long generic opening

Start with the purpose. The reader should know why you are writing within the first few sentences.

Repeating the problem without developing impact

After stating what happened, explain a consequence, example or practical difficulty.

Vague closing

“Please help” is less actionable than “Could you transfer my registration to the Thursday class?”

Padding for word count

The approximate range is not a reason to repeat the same complaint. Add relevant details, not filler.

A 90-second planning method

Write four labels before drafting:

R: recipient/relationship.
P: purpose.
1/2/3: required prompt points.
A: action/outcome you want.

Then decide which details make each required point concrete. This reduces the risk of writing a polished email that fails Task Fulfillment because one instruction was forgotten.

Frequently asked questions

Does CELPIP Task 1 always require a formal email?

No. The appropriate tone depends on the recipient and situation in the prompt. Prepare professional, neutral and friendly communication rather than forcing one tone onto every task.

Should I write a subject line in CELPIP Task 1?

Do not invent formatting requirements that are not stated in your prompt or current official interface. Focus on the required response, recipient, purpose, content and tone, and follow the live on-screen instructions.

How many paragraphs should I write?

There is no useful universal paragraph count. A clear opening, logically grouped body ideas and an appropriate closing matter more than forcing every response into the same number of paragraphs.

Can I memorize one email template?

Use a flexible framework for greeting, purpose, required points and closing action. Avoid memorized filler that may not fit the new recipient or purpose.
