CELPIP vs PTE Core for Canada PR 2026: Format, CLB & How to Choose

IRCC currently accepts both CELPIP-General and PTE Core as approved English tests for Express Entry. Neither test receives extra immigration preference simply because of the brand you choose.
The practical question is: which test format gives you the strongest repeatable CLB-equivalent results?

Because the task designs differ significantly, raw scores should never be compared directly between the two tests.
When CELPIP may fit you better
CELPIP can be a strong fit if you:
- prefer its Canadian everyday and workplace contexts;
- like a computer-based workflow;
- are comfortable recording Speaking answers into a microphone;
- prefer the two CELPIP Writing tasks: email and survey response;
- already have strong familiarity with CELPIP's six Listening, four Reading, and eight Speaking task types.

When PTE Core may fit you better
PTE Core may suit you if its particular integrated task types and automated computer workflow match your strengths better.
Do not switch based only on claims that one exam is "easy." Take official sample material from both tests and compare your performance under time pressure.
CLB conversion matters more than raw score labels
CELPIP commonly maps Levels 4–12 directly to the same-number CLB level.
PTE Core uses a different score scale and IRCC conversion table. A PTE score number should not be compared numerically with a CELPIP level.
For example, your immigration goal may be CLB 9, but the test-specific score needed to demonstrate that benchmark is determined by the IRCC conversion table for each approved test.

Compare Speaking formats carefully
Both tests are computer delivered, but the task design is different.
CELPIP Speaking currently has eight scored task types after a practice task, including Giving Advice, Personal Experience, Describing a Scene, Making Predictions, Comparing and Persuading, Difficult Situation, Expressing Opinions, and Describing an Unusual Situation.
Before switching tests, complete several CELPIP Speaking practice prompts and compare the experience with official PTE Core sample tasks.
Compare Writing tasks
CELPIP-General Writing has two tasks in a 53-minute component:
- Writing an Email;
- Responding to Survey Questions.
If these practical formats suit the way you organize ideas, CELPIP may be more comfortable than learning an unfamiliar test system from zero.
