CELPIP Speaking Task 6: Difficult Situation Strategy

CELPIP Speaking Task 6 is Dealing with a Difficult Situation. The current 2026 format gives you 60 seconds to prepare and 60 seconds to speak.

This task often presents a conflict between two people, priorities, or choices. You choose a position and explain your decision directly to the person in the scenario. Official CELPIP guidance emphasizes being considerate but firm, clearly outlining the problem, explaining the decision, and supporting it with effective reasons.

Quick strategy: identify who you are speaking to, choose your position early, acknowledge the difficulty, state the decision clearly, give two practical reasons, and finish with a respectful next step.

CELPIP Speaking Task 6 format

• Task: Deal with a conflict or difficult decision
• Preparation time: 60 seconds
• Speaking time: 60 seconds
• Important: speak directly to the person named in the situation

Task 6 gives you more preparation time than most Speaking tasks because you need to manage both content and interpersonal tone.

What makes Task 6 different?

The response should not sound like an essay. It is a conversation with someone affected by your decision.

A strong answer usually combines:

• empathy or acknowledgement;
• a clear decision;
• reasons that are specific to the situation;
• respectful but firm language;
• a practical suggestion, compromise, or next step when appropriate.

What CELPIP raters evaluate

Content and coherence

Explain the conflict clearly and support your position with developed reasons. Two strong reasons are easier to follow than four vague ones.

Vocabulary

Useful Task 6 language often involves diplomacy and consequences:

• I understand why…
• I realize this is disappointing…
• unfortunately…
• the main concern is…
• because of…
• I need to prioritize…
• the fairest option would be…
• what I can do instead is…

Listenability

Tone matters. Sound calm and controlled. Avoid speaking so softly that your decision becomes unclear or so aggressively that the response becomes inappropriate for the relationship.

Task fulfillment

Address the correct person and make the decision explicit. A response can contain good English but lose effectiveness if it talks about the person instead of to them.

A 60-second preparation method

Write five short notes:

Person — who am I speaking to?
Decision — what am I choosing?
Reason 1 — strongest practical reason
Reason 2 — second practical reason
Alternative — what can I offer instead?

Example:

sister
cannot lend car
job interview
only vehicle / fixed time
drive her later / pay taxi

A flexible Task 6 template

1. Acknowledge the other person's position

• “I completely understand why you need the car today.”
• “I know this is frustrating, and I understand why you were expecting me to agree.”

2. State the decision

• “Unfortunately, I need to use it this afternoon.”
• “After thinking about both options, I have to choose…”

Do not hide the decision until the final sentence.

3. Reason 1

Give a concrete reason and consequence.

4. Reason 2

Use another distinct reason rather than repeating the first one.

5. Offer a practical alternative

• “What I can do instead is…”
• “To make this easier, I can…”
• “Could we…”

6. Close respectfully

• “I hope you understand why I need to make this choice.”
• “I really want to help, even though I cannot agree to the original plan.”

Original Task 6 prompt

You promised to help your cousin move apartments on Saturday. Your manager has now asked you to work an emergency shift at the same time. You need the extra income and your workplace is short-staffed. Speak to your cousin and explain that you cannot help during the original time. Give reasons and suggest another solution.

Original sample response

Hey Arjun, I know I promised to help you move on Saturday morning, and I'm really sorry to change the plan at the last minute. Unfortunately, my manager has asked me to cover an emergency shift, so I need to work during that time. First, our team is already short-staffed, and if I refuse, two coworkers would have to handle the entire shift by themselves. Also, I really need the extra hours this month because I have an unexpected repair bill. I do not want to leave you without help, though. I can come over as soon as my shift ends and help with the heavier furniture in the evening, or I can pay for a small moving van for the morning. I hope you understand, and I still want to make sure your move goes smoothly.

Why this response works

• It speaks directly to the cousin.
• It acknowledges the broken promise.
• The decision is clear early.
• Two separate reasons are developed.
• The tone is apologetic but firm.
• It offers realistic alternatives.

Common Task 6 mistakes

Avoiding a clear decision

Do not spend 50 seconds discussing both sides and then run out of time.

Sounding rude or dismissive

You can be firm without being aggressive.

Being too apologetic to explain the reasons

Acknowledgement is useful, but the body of the response still needs content.

Speaking about the listener in third person

If the prompt tells you to explain the decision to your manager, friend, customer, or family member, address that person directly.

Giving an unrealistic compromise

An alternative should fit the scenario. Do not solve the problem with resources the prompt never suggests you have.

Level 9-focused self-check

Content/Coherence — Is the decision supported with clear, developed reasons?
Vocabulary — Is the language precise and appropriate for the relationship?
Listenability — Do I sound calm, clear, and controlled?
Task Fulfillment — Did I speak directly to the person, maintain an appropriate tone, and fully explain the decision?

Frequently asked questions

How much preparation time is there for Task 6?

You currently get 60 seconds.

How long do I speak?

You have 60 seconds.

Should I sound formal?

Match the person in the prompt. A manager or customer may require more formal wording than a close friend, but every version should remain respectful.

Do I need to offer a compromise?

Not every prompt requires one, but a practical alternative can help make the response complete when it fits naturally.

Should I explain both sides equally?

No. Acknowledge the other side briefly, then use most of the response to explain and support your chosen decision.
