CELPIP Speaking Task 1: Giving Advice Strategy

CELPIP Speaking Task 1 is Giving Advice. In the current CELPIP format, you get 30 seconds to prepare and 90 seconds to speak. The goal is not to recite a memorized speech. You need to respond directly to the person in the situation, give practical advice, develop your ideas with reasons or examples, and use a tone that fits the relationship.

If Task 1 feels difficult, the usual problem is not a lack of advanced vocabulary. Most weak responses either give too few developed ideas, spend too long on the opening, or list suggestions without explaining why they would help.

Quick strategy: plan three pieces of advice, attach one reason or example to each, and keep the opening and closing short.

CELPIP Speaking Task 1 format

The current official CELPIP Speaking Pro: Target 9+ study material describes Task 1 as helping someone make a decision or prepare for something. It gives you:

• Preparation time: 30 seconds
• Speaking time: 90 seconds
• Task: Give advice directly to the person in the situation

The official strategy also recommends providing at least three suggestions, giving a practical reason or example for each suggestion, signaling new suggestions with transitions, and maintaining a helpful and thoughtful tone.

You can verify the current format in the official CELPIP Speaking Pro: Target 9+ study material and the CELPIP-General test format.

What CELPIP raters actually evaluate

Speaking is evaluated across four official performance dimensions. Your Task 1 preparation should support all four rather than focusing only on vocabulary.

1. Content and coherence

Raters consider the number and quality of your ideas, how well they are organized, and whether you develop them with examples or supporting details.

For Task 1, that means this is usually stronger:

Advice → reason → practical result

than this:

Advice → another advice → another advice → another advice

Three developed suggestions are normally more useful than six undeveloped ones.

2. Vocabulary

You need enough range and precision to communicate naturally. Avoid forcing rare words into a casual situation. Useful Task 1 language often includes advice verbs, conditionals, benefit language, and specific vocabulary connected to the scenario.

3. Listenability

Your response should be easy to follow. Rhythm, pronunciation, intonation, pauses, grammar, self-correction, and sentence variety all contribute. A natural, steady response is more useful than racing through a memorized paragraph.

4. Task fulfillment

Raters consider relevance, completeness, tone, and length. If the prompt asks you to advise a friend, speak to the friend. If it describes a workplace relationship, adjust your tone accordingly.

The official CELPIP performance standards explain these four dimensions in more detail.

A 30-second planning method

Do not try to write full sentences during preparation. Thirty seconds disappears quickly.

Use a tiny plan such as:

A1 — main suggestion
R1 — why it helps
A2 — second suggestion
R2 — why it helps
A3 — final suggestion
R3 — example/result

For example, if a friend is nervous about starting a new job, your notes might be:

research company → confident
arrive early → no stress
ask questions → learn faster

Those six short notes are enough to guide a complete answer.

A flexible CELPIP Speaking Task 1 template

A template should organize your thinking, not replace it. Use the structure below as a framework and change the wording naturally for each prompt.

Opening: about 8–12 seconds

Acknowledge the situation and move directly into advice.

• “I can understand why you’re a little worried about this.”
• “That sounds like a big decision, but there are a few things I’d suggest.”
• “If I were in your position, I’d focus on three things.”

Advice 1: about 20–25 seconds

Give the strongest suggestion first and explain the benefit.

• “First, I’d recommend…”
• “The first thing I would do is…”
• “If I were you, I would…”

Then develop it:

• “That would help because…”
• “The main benefit is…”
• “This way, you can…”

Advice 2: about 20–25 seconds

Use a clear transition and develop the second idea.

• “Another thing you could do is…”
• “I’d also suggest…”
• “On top of that, you might want to…”

Advice 3: about 20–25 seconds

Add a final practical suggestion, example, or precaution.

• “One final thing I’d recommend is…”
• “Finally, make sure you…”
• “The last thing I would keep in mind is…”

Closing: about 5–10 seconds

End naturally without repeating the entire response.

• “If you do those things, I think you’ll feel much more prepared.”
• “I hope that helps, and I’m sure you’ll handle it well.”

The exact timing can vary. The point is to protect most of the 90 seconds for developed advice rather than spending 25 seconds on a generic introduction.

Original practice prompt

Your friend has accepted a position at a new company and is nervous about the first week. Give your friend advice about how to prepare and make a good start.

Take 30 seconds and write only three idea-reason pairs before reading the sample below.

Sample response

Hi Maya, I completely understand why you’re nervous, but I think you can make your first week much easier with a little preparation. First, I’d suggest learning as much as you can about the company and your team before your first day. That way, you’ll recognize the main projects and you’ll feel more confident when people start explaining your responsibilities. Second, try to arrive a little early every morning, especially during the first week. You won’t have to rush, and you’ll have time to organize yourself before work begins. Finally, don’t be afraid to ask questions and take short notes when someone teaches you a new process. Nobody expects a new employee to know everything immediately, and asking clear questions shows that you care about doing the job properly. If you stay prepared, punctual, and curious, I think you’ll make a very positive first impression. Good luck — I’m sure you’ll do great.

Why this response works

The answer does several useful things without sounding like a memorized essay:

• It speaks directly to the friend.
• It gives three distinct suggestions.
• Every suggestion includes a reason or practical benefit.
• Transitions make the organization obvious.
• The vocabulary fits an everyday workplace situation.
• The tone is supportive and natural.
• The closing is brief.

A higher-level response is not created by replacing every common word with a complicated synonym. It comes from clearer development, more precise language, stronger control, and a response that fully fits the situation.

Useful language for Giving Advice

Natural advice phrases

• “If I were you, I’d…”
• “I’d strongly recommend…”
• “You might want to consider…”
• “It would be a good idea to…”
• “Another practical option is…”
• “Make sure you…”
• “Try to avoid…”

Reason and result phrases

• “because this will help you…”
• “which means you’ll be able to…”
• “the main advantage is that…”
• “as a result…”
• “this way…”
• “for example…”

Supportive closing phrases

• “I hope that makes the decision a little easier.”
• “I think you’ll feel much more confident if you do that.”
• “Whatever you decide, make sure it works for your situation.”

Seven common Task 1 mistakes

1. Giving advice without reasons

“Practice more, arrive early, and ask questions” contains ideas, but almost no development. Explain why each suggestion matters.

2. Memorizing a long introduction

A generic 20- or 30-second introduction uses time that could have been spent developing relevant ideas.

3. Trying to sound unnaturally formal

Task 1 often involves advising someone you know. Match the tone to the relationship described in the prompt.

4. Using the same sentence pattern repeatedly

Repeating “You should…” five times makes the response sound mechanical. Mix suggestions, conditionals, recommendations, and result clauses naturally.

5. Writing full sentences during preparation

Your prep time is for quick thinking. Keywords are easier to read while speaking and reduce the temptation to read a script.

6. Speaking too fast to fit more words

More words do not automatically mean a better response. Clarity, development, accuracy, and listenability matter.

7. Stopping after one small mistake

Natural speech includes occasional corrections. If you make a minor grammar or word-choice error, correct it briefly if needed and continue. Do not restart the entire response.

How to practice for a CELPIP Level 9 target

CELPIP scores Speaking across all eight tasks, not Task 1 in isolation. There is no single “Level 9 template” that guarantees a score. Instead, use the official performance dimensions as your practice checklist.

After each Task 1 recording, ask:

Content/Coherence

• Did I give enough relevant ideas?
• Did I develop each main suggestion with a reason or example?
• Was the order easy to follow?

Vocabulary

• Did I use precise words for this topic?
• Did I repeat the same simple phrase too often?
• Did my vocabulary sound natural rather than forced?

Listenability

• Could a listener understand me comfortably?
• Was my pace steady?
• Were pauses and self-corrections controlled?
• Did I use some sentence variety?

Task Fulfillment

• Did I actually give advice?
• Did I speak to the correct person?
• Was my tone appropriate?
• Did I use the available speaking time effectively?

Record the same type of task several times across different topics. Look for patterns, not one-off mistakes.

A seven-day Task 1 practice plan

Day 1: Record five untimed responses. Focus only on generating three useful suggestions and reasons.

Day 2: Use 30-second planning but no speaking timer. Train yourself to create compact notes.

Day 3: Complete five fully timed Task 1 responses.

Day 4: Review recordings for content/coherence and task fulfillment. Rewrite only your planning notes, not full scripts.

Day 5: Focus on vocabulary and sentence variety. Re-record two previous topics with more precise language.

Day 6: Focus on listenability: pace, pronunciation, intonation, pauses, and natural delivery.

Day 7: Complete a mixed Speaking session so Task 1 is practiced in context with other CELPIP task types.

Reading a structure is useful, but Speaking improves by speaking. Use CELPIP Speaking Practice to record timed responses across all eight task types and review your delivery after submission.

When you are comfortable with individual tasks, move to a full CELPIP mock test to practice Speaking together with Listening, Reading, and Writing under a longer exam-style session.

Frequently asked questions

How much preparation time is there for CELPIP Speaking Task 1?

The current official format gives you 30 seconds of preparation time for Task 1.

How long do I speak for Task 1?

The current official format gives you 90 seconds of speaking time.

How many suggestions should I give?

Official CELPIP Speaking Pro material recommends at least three suggestions, with a practical reason or example supporting each one.

Do I need a memorized template?

No. A flexible structure can help you organize your response, but a fully memorized script can sound unnatural and may not fit the prompt. Practice adapting the structure to different situations.

Is Task 1 scored separately as CELPIP Level 9?

Your final Speaking level reflects performance across the Speaking component. Use the four official dimensions — Content/Coherence, Vocabulary, Listenability, and Task Fulfillment — to evaluate Task 1 practice rather than treating one response as a guaranteed overall level.

What should I write during the 30-second preparation time?

Write short keywords for three suggestions and the reason or example attached to each. Avoid full sentences so you can spend the limited preparation time thinking rather than writing.
