CELPIP Speaking 9 to 10: Precision Plan

If you have already reached CELPIP Speaking 9 and are targeting 10, your practice problem is different from someone trying to move from 6 to 7. You probably do not need a completely new speaking system. You need to make a strong system more precise and more consistent.

9→10 principle: keep the structure that already works, then remove the weak moments — vague wording, thin examples, rushed delivery, incomplete task fulfillment, and loss of control under difficult prompts.

1. Audit consistency across all eight tasks

Do not judge readiness from your best two tasks.

Record one complete Speaking set and label each task:

• strong;
• acceptable;
• unstable.

If Task 1 is excellent but Task 6 and Task 8 become disorganized, your training priority is obvious.

The current eight-task format is listed on the official CELPIP-General page.

2. Replace vague development with specific development

A Level 9 response can already be clear. The next improvement comes from precision.

Vague:

This option would be better because it would help the community a lot.

Specific:

This option would be more practical because it adds evening service after 9 p.m., which directly helps restaurant and hospital employees who finish after the current buses stop running.

The second answer communicates a specific feature, consequence, and affected group.

3. Control transitions without sounding scripted

Use transitions to make organization audible, but vary them naturally.

Instead of repeating:

First... Second... Third...

mix functional transitions:

• The main reason is...
• Another practical advantage is...
• What concerns me most is...
• On the other hand...
• Even if that is true...
• For that reason...

The goal is not variety for its own sake. The listener should always know how the new idea relates to the previous one.

4. Build vocabulary around functions

High-level Speaking vocabulary is often functional rather than decorative.

Comparing

• more cost-effective;
• less disruptive;
• better suited to;
• a stronger long-term option.

Persuading

• the main benefit for you is;
• what makes this option worthwhile is;
• I would strongly recommend;
• you would avoid.

Difficult situations

• I understand your concern;
• unfortunately, I cannot;
• the fairest option would be;
• I can offer an alternative.

Opinions

• the strongest reason;
• a likely consequence;
• in the long run;
• although there is a drawback.

5. Make your examples do real work

An example should prove the point rather than repeat it.

Point: remote work saves commuting time.

Weak example: For example, people save time.

Useful example: For example, an employee who normally spends 45 minutes travelling each way could recover seven or eight hours during a five-day week.

6. Improve delivery at the sentence level

Review one recording with headphones and mark:

• swallowed sentence endings;
• repeated filler sounds;
• monotone sections;
• rushed lists;
• long searching pauses;
• words you consistently mispronounce.

Then re-record the same prompt once. Do not keep retaking until it sounds memorized.

7. Practice the hardest prompt first

When you are already near your target, spending most of your time on comfortable tasks produces small returns.

Start each session with the task you least want to see on test day.

For many candidates that may be:

• Task 5 because comparison and persuasion must happen together;
• Task 6 because tone and decision-making matter;
• Task 7 because 90 seconds requires sustained development;
• Task 8 because the visual can be unusual and difficult to describe logically.

Use the task guides linked from CELPIP Speaking Guide 2026.

A 10-session plan for Level 10 preparation

1. Full eight-task diagnostic.
2. Weakest task × 5 prompts.
3. Second-weakest task × 5 prompts.
4. Vocabulary precision session.
5. Development/examples session.
6. Listenability session.
7. Tasks 5–8 under full timing.
8. Full eight-task simulation.
9. Repair the two lowest responses.
10. Final no-retake simulation.

Do not destroy a Level 9 response by overengineering it

Candidates near the top of their target range sometimes make performance worse by adding:

• unnatural idioms;
• extremely long sentences;
• memorized introductions;
• excessive filler transitions;
• examples unrelated to the prompt.

Keep what is already clear. Add precision where the evidence shows a gap.

Practice with all eight Speaking task types, and use a full mock test to verify that the improvement survives the complete exam experience.
