CELPIP Listening Part 4 is Listening to a News Item. The current official format contains 5 questions, and the March 2026 CELPIP Listening Pro study pack suggests approximately 5 minutes.

You hear one newsreader deliver a formal news item, roughly 1.5 minutes in the official study material. You hear it once. After the recording, all five questions are displayed together, and you can answer them in any order before the part timer expires.

Quick strategy: notes should capture the news framework: what happened → where/when → who is affected → cause → response/result. Because questions appear after the audio, your notes must preserve the story before you know exactly what will be asked.

The Parts 4–6 rule

In Parts 4–6, the full question set appears after the recording. You can answer in any order and change answers while the part time remains.

“Preview the questions before the news begins.”

You do not have that question set yet. Instead, listen for the structure of a news report and take useful notes.

News-item note framework

Write five headings mentally or on your notes:

Event: what happened?
Place/time: where/when?
People: who is involved/affected?
Cause: why did it happen?
Response: what happens next?

Example:

Event: bridge lane closure
Place: Hwy 8 east
Time: Mon–Thu nights
Cause: resurfacing
Effect: detour 15 min
Next: finish Sept 12

Original mini-example

A local newsreader reports that the city will close two lanes of Harbour Street overnight from Monday to Thursday for three weeks. Crews will replace damaged water pipes beneath the road. The street will remain open during daytime business hours. City officials recommend using King Avenue after 8 p.m., and nearby restaurants will keep normal opening hours.

Question: Why are lanes being closed?

A. Restaurants requested more space.
B. Workers are replacing underground pipes.
C. The city is building a bicycle path.
D. Traffic lights are being installed.

Best answer: B.

Question: When will Harbour Street operate normally?

A. During daytime hours
B. Every night after 8 p.m.
C. Only on weekends
D. After restaurants close

Writing disconnected facts

News reports are easier to remember when notes follow event → cause → effect → response.

Missing who said what

A newsreader may quote an official, resident, or expert. Mark the source of an opinion.

Confusing the current event with a future plan

Separate what has happened from what officials say will happen next.

Practice routine

Use 1–2 minute news clips. Listen once, then answer from notes:

• What happened?
• Where and when?
• Why?
• Who is affected?
• What action is being taken?

Only after answering should you replay or read a transcript.
