CELPIP Listening Part 3: Listening for Information

CELPIP Listening Part 3 is Listening for Information. The current official format contains 6 questions, and the March 2026 CELPIP Listening Pro study pack suggests approximately 6 minutes.

You hear one speaker deliver an informational recording, roughly 2–2.5 minutes in the official study material. After the recording, questions are presented one at a time, with roughly 30 seconds to hear and answer each question.

Quick strategy: organize notes by topic blocks rather than sentence order. Capture purpose, main sections, numbers/names, causes, examples, and the final takeaway.

Verify the current format on the official CELPIP-General page and in the 2026 CELPIP Listening Pro Study Pack.

CELPIP Listening Part 3 format

• Part: Listening for Information
• Questions: 6
• Approximate practice timing: 6 minutes
• Speakers: one
• Recording: about 2–2.5 minutes in official study material
• Question delivery: one at a time after the recording

The speaker may explain a place, process, event, service, procedure, or another informational topic.

What Part 3 tests

You may need to identify:

• main idea or purpose;
• key details;
• sequence;
• cause and effect;
• examples;
• comparisons;
• implied meaning.

Because there is only one speaker, the challenge shifts from speaker tracking to information density.

Topic-block note taking

Imagine a talk about a community composting program.

Write:

Purpose: new food-waste pickup
Start: Sept 1 / weekly
Allowed: fruit veg coffee grounds
No: plastic / liquids
Bins: city delivers Aug 20
Help: website / 311

You have preserved the structure without writing full sentences.

Common Part 3 mistakes

Writing every number without context

“10, 6, 7” is almost useless. Write “close10 / discount6 / kids7.”

Missing topic shifts

Use a slash or new line when the speaker moves to a new subject.

Focusing only on details

Capture the overall purpose too; some questions ask what the speaker is mainly explaining.

Confusing examples with rules

A speaker may give one example after a general rule. Do not treat the example as the only allowed case.

Practice routine

Listen once to a 2–3 minute informational clip. Build notes under:

• purpose;
• section 1;
• section 2;
• section 3;
• key numbers/names;
• final action or takeaway.

Then answer questions without replaying.
