CELPIP-General Practice Test 2026: All 4 Skills & Full-Test Strategy
By MyCELPIP Editorial Team · Updated September 7, 2026
CELPIP-General practice test — quick answer: if you are preparing for CELPIP-General, your practice plan must cover all four skills: Listening, Reading, Writing and Speaking. Do not accidentally build a two-skill plan from General LS material when your purpose requires the full General test.
The current official CELPIP-General format is computer-delivered and lists Listening at 46–55 minutes, Reading at 43–56 minutes, Writing at 53 minutes and Speaking at 15 minutes. Verify the live format on CELPIP Test Format.
CELPIP-General vs General LS
This distinction should be settled before serious preparation:
| Version | Skills |
|---|---|
| CELPIP-General | Listening, Reading, Writing, Speaking |
| CELPIP-General LS | Listening, Speaking |
Use the official CELPIP site and the organization receiving your result to confirm which version is accepted for your purpose.

Listening: cover all six parts
The current six scored Listening parts contain 8, 5, 6, 5, 8 and 6 questions respectively, while CELPIP notes that unscored development items may also appear. Practise one-pass comprehension, compact notes and speaker/viewpoint tracking rather than relying on replay.
Use Listening practice for the complete part reference.
Reading: cover all four parts
The current four scored Reading parts list 11 questions for Reading Correspondence, 8 for Reading to Apply a Diagram, 9 for Reading for Information and 10 for Reading for Viewpoints; unscored development items may also appear. Train evidence location and paraphrase recognition across all four formats.
Use Reading practice for part-specific strategy.
Writing: train both task purposes
CELPIP-General Writing currently contains Writing an Email and Responding to Survey Questions. Do not prepare only one task because it feels easier. Review Content/Coherence, Vocabulary, Readability and Task Fulfillment.
Use Writing practice for frameworks, original examples and sample-review guidance.
Speaking: rotate through all eight tasks
The current Speaking component has eight scored task types after the practice task. Rotate through advice, personal experience, visual description/prediction, persuasion, difficult situations, opinions and unusual situations so your preparation is not dependent on one comfortable prompt family.
Use Speaking practice for timing and task frameworks.
The three levels of General practice
Level 1 — task drills
Use when one task type is clearly weak. Example: Reading Part 4 viewpoints or Speaking Task 7 opinions.
Level 2 — full-skill simulations
Use when the task is improving but you need to test pacing across the whole skill.
Level 3 — four-skill full mock
Use when individual skills are reasonably stable and you need to test endurance and transitions across the complete General experience.
Moving through these levels is more efficient than taking full mocks from day one.
Build a four-skill readiness dashboard
Track each skill separately:
| Skill | Current evidence | Target | Main weakness |
|---|---|---|---|
| Listening | fresh practice trend | your target | e.g. viewpoints |
| Reading | fresh practice trend | your target | e.g. time in Part 4 |
| Writing | rubric-based feedback | your target | e.g. task completeness |
| Speaking | recorded-response feedback | your target | e.g. development |
Do not average the four skills and hide the weakest one. For many score goals, the lowest component is the practical constraint.
Full General mock protocol
When you are ready to simulate:
- Use fresh material.
- Complete all four skills in the intended order/flow of the simulation.
- Avoid transcripts, model responses and convenient retakes.
- Record where time or concentration deteriorates.
- Review each skill separately afterward.
- Spend the next study block repairing the biggest weakness before another mock.
Use full CELPIP mock tests for this stage.
Common CELPIP-General preparation mistakes
- Preparing only Listening and Speaking when you need all four skills.
- Ignoring Writing/Speaking until the last week because they lack simple answer keys.
- Taking four-skill mocks before learning the individual task types.
- Using a General LS resource as if it covered the full General test.
- Averaging skill performance instead of tracking the lowest component.
- Treating a practice estimate as an official test result.
Frequently asked questions
What skills are tested in CELPIP-General?
Listening, Reading, Writing and Speaking.
Is CELPIP-General practice different from General LS practice?
Yes. General LS covers Listening and Speaking only, while CELPIP-General preparation must include all four skills.
Where should I start CELPIP-General preparation?
Learn the current format, take one four-skill diagnostic, then spend most of the next practice block on the weakest skill/task type.
Should every practice session include all four skills?
No. Targeted sessions are often more efficient for improvement. Use four-skill sessions periodically to test overall readiness and endurance.
