CELPIP for Express Entry 2026: CLB & PR Guide

By MyCELPIP Editorial Team · Updated September 9, 2026

If you plan to use CELPIP for Express Entry, the current IRCC instruction is clear: use CELPIP-General. CELPIP-General LS does not provide all four language abilities required for Express Entry.

IRCC currently accepts approved English tests including CELPIP-General, IELTS General Training, and PTE Core. Your result is converted to Canadian Language Benchmark levels and then assessed under the immigration program and CRS rules that apply to your profile.

Quick answer: CELPIP 9 in an ability maps to CLB 9 in that ability. But CLB 9 is not the minimum for every Express Entry program.

Always verify current rules on the official IRCC Express Entry language-test page.

Which CELPIP test does Express Entry accept?

IRCC currently specifies CELPIP-General for Express Entry.

CELPIP-General tests:

  • Listening;
  • Reading;
  • Writing;
  • Speaking.

CELPIP-General LS tests only Listening and Speaking, so it is not the CELPIP version used for Express Entry.

Current minimum language levels by Express Entry program

Minimum requirements depend on the program.

Canadian Experience Class

IRCC currently lists:

  • CLB 7 for TEER 0 or TEER 1 occupations;
  • CLB 5 for TEER 2 or TEER 3 occupations.

Federal Skilled Worker Program

The current minimum first-official-language requirement is CLB 7 in all four abilities, subject to the rest of the program requirements.

Federal Skilled Trades Program

IRCC currently lists:

  • CLB 5 in Speaking and Listening;
  • CLB 4 in Reading and Writing.

These are minimum eligibility thresholds, not guaranteed invitation scores. Express Entry selection depends on the complete profile and the rules/draws in effect at the time.

Why many candidates target CLB 9

Language points can change at different CLB thresholds, which is why CLB 9 is a common optimization target even when a program's minimum eligibility threshold is lower.

Do not assume that moving one skill from 8 to 9 has the same impact for every candidate. Use the current IRCC CRS tools and rules with your full profile.

If your preparation target is 9 across all skills, use How to Get CLB 9 in CELPIP.

How long is a CELPIP result usable for Express Entry?

Keep the test provider's wording separate from the immigration rule.

CELPIP's current Test Results page says that online score access is available for two years from the test date. The same page also states that CELPIP test scores are valid for two years from the date the score report is issued.

For Express Entry, follow IRCC's rule for the immigration deadline: approved language-test results must be less than two years old when you create your Express Entry profile and when you submit your permanent residence application.

Practical rule: do not calculate an Express Entry deadline from a preparation website. Check the test date/result information in your CELPIP account and the current IRCC language-test instructions before submitting.

Should you choose CELPIP or IELTS for Express Entry?

IRCC does not give an Express Entry preference simply because a candidate chose CELPIP rather than another approved English test.

Choose the format that gives you the strongest reliable results. Compare:

  • computer-recorded CELPIP Speaking vs live IELTS Speaking;
  • task familiarity;
  • current practice performance;
  • available test dates and locations;
  • how much preparation you have already invested in each format.

Preparation path for Express Entry candidates

  1. Identify the CLB level your immigration strategy is targeting.
  2. Take one full CELPIP diagnostic.
  3. Compare all four skills separately.
  4. Repair the weakest task types.
  5. Repeat a full simulation after targeted practice.

Frequently asked questions

Is CELPIP-General accepted for Express Entry?

Yes. It is one of the currently approved English tests listed by IRCC.

Is CELPIP-General LS accepted for Express Entry?

No. Current IRCC Express Entry instructions specify CELPIP-General.

Do I need CLB 9 for CEC?

Not as a universal minimum. Current CEC minimums depend on the TEER category of qualifying Canadian work experience. CLB 9 may still be a useful points target depending on the complete profile.

Is CELPIP 9 the same as CLB 9?

Yes, for that ability.
