CELPIP Score Validity for Immigration: How Long Is It Valid?
CELPIP scores are valid for 2 years from your test date for Canadian immigration applications including Express Entry and Provincial Nominee Programs. The validity is calculated from the date you sat the test — not when results were released. Scores cannot be extended or renewed; you must retest if your score expires.
Score timing is one of the most overlooked elements in Express Entry planning. An expired score when you receive your ITA means your application cannot proceed — even if you were otherwise competitive. Planning your test date against your expected ITA timeline is essential.
CELPIP score validity by purpose
Express Entry (FSW, CEC, FSTP)
IRCC standardYour score must be valid at the time you receive your Invitation to Apply (ITA) and when you submit your permanent residency application. An expired score cannot be used — you must retest.
Provincial Nominee Programs (PNP)
IRCC standardMost PNP streams follow IRCC's 2-year standard. Some provinces may specify their own requirements — verify with the specific PNP stream guidelines.
Canadian Citizenship application
IRCC standardIRCC accepts CELPIP General-LS (Listening and Speaking only) or CELPIP General for citizenship applications demonstrating language ability.
Provincial nursing / professional regulatory bodies
Each professional regulatory body sets its own validity policy. Some accept CELPIP scores for up to 2 years; others may require a more recent test. Verify with your specific college before testing.
University or college admissions
Most Canadian institutions follow a 2-year standard consistent with IRCC. Confirm with your admissions office — some institutions accept scores up to 3 years old.
Planning your test timing — 5 scenarios
You are entering the Express Entry pool now
LowTake CELPIP within the next 60 days. The 2-year clock starts from your test date — not when you receive results, not when you enter the pool. Most competitive Express Entry profiles receive an ITA within 6–18 months. Testing now leaves a 6–18 month buffer before expiry.
You already have a CELPIP score from 18 months ago
MediumYou have approximately 6 months of validity remaining. If your CRS score is competitive for your target category and draws are active, act now. If your CRS score is not competitive, consider whether to retest now (for a potentially higher score with a fresh 2-year validity) or to improve other profile elements first.
Your CELPIP score will expire before you expect to receive an ITA
HighRetest. There is no way to extend or renew an existing CELPIP score — the 2-year validity is fixed. A retake also gives you the opportunity to improve your score, which may add CRS points and accelerate your ITA timeline.
You have an ITA but your CELPIP score is about to expire
HighOnce you have an ITA, your score validity at the time of the ITA is what matters for the application. Contact an immigration consultant or lawyer immediately if your score will expire before you can submit your full application — this is a time-critical situation.
You need CELPIP for both Express Entry and a provincial regulatory body
LowA single CELPIP General test result satisfies both IRCC immigration requirements and most regulatory body language requirements simultaneously. Time your test to serve both purposes — check both expiry windows.

Typical ITA window: 6–18 months after entering the pool
Score expires at 24 months — must receive ITA before this date
Taking CELPIP now and entering the pool quickly leaves the most buffer between your ITA window and score expiry. Delaying testing by 6+ months after deciding to apply reduces your buffer significantly.
Frequently asked questions
Does the 2-year validity run from my test date or from when I receive my results?
From your test date. Results are typically released 2–4 business days after your test, but the 2-year expiry is calculated from the date you sat the test, not the date results were published. Check your score report — it will show your test date.
Can I extend my CELPIP score validity?
No. CELPIP does not offer score extensions or renewals. Once your score has expired, it cannot be submitted for any IRCC or immigration application. You must take the test again. Planning your test date relative to your expected ITA timeline is the only way to manage this.
What happens if my score expires while my Express Entry application is being processed?
If your score was valid at the time you received your ITA and at the time you submitted your complete PR application, expiry during processing is generally not an issue. The key dates are ITA receipt and application submission — not the processing period. Confirm this with your immigration consultant for your specific situation.
If I retake CELPIP, which score does IRCC use?
You choose which score to submit to IRCC. When you update your Express Entry profile with language results, you enter your candidate ID and test date for the specific result you want to use. You are not required to disclose all attempts — only the one you choose to submit is considered.
My CELPIP score is from 2 years and 1 month ago. Is it still valid?
No — a score older than 2 years from the test date is expired and cannot be submitted to IRCC. The validity window is strict. You will need to retest.
Does improving my CELPIP score affect my Express Entry profile immediately?
Yes. Once you update your Express Entry profile with a new, higher CELPIP score, your CRS score is recalculated immediately. This can move your profile up in the pool ranking for the next draw.
