Pillar 3

CELPIP Writing — Score 12

Writing has two tasks: an email (Task 1) and a survey response (Task 2). Both are graded on task response, vocabulary, coherence, and form.

Task 1 (Email): the 3-paragraph rule

Opening (acknowledge + purpose), Middle (all required points, one sentence each), Close (polite call to action). Never write more than 150–165 words. Every extra word is a distraction from your score.

Always hit every bullet point

The scoring rubric checks task response first. A response that addresses all 3 bullets with average vocabulary scores higher than a beautifully written response that misses one bullet.

Vocabulary boosters that fit naturally

Replace basic verbs: 'use' → 'utilize', 'say' → 'indicate', 'help' → 'assist', 'need' → 'require'. Add one formal connector per paragraph: 'Furthermore', 'As a result', 'In light of this'. Don't overdo it — one per paragraph is enough.

Task 2 (Survey): take a position and defend it

The survey asks you to agree/disagree or choose between options. State your position in the first sentence. Give two specific reasons. End with a sentence that ties back to your opening. Graders reward clarity over complexity.

Time allocation: 27 min for email, 26 for survey

Leave 2 minutes at the end of each task to re-read for subject-verb agreement and missing words. Most errors that cost points are invisible the first time you write them.

Avoid contractions, slang, and one-sentence paragraphs

Write 'I would' not 'I'd'. Write 'cannot' not 'can't'. A paragraph with one sentence signals you ran out of ideas. If stuck, add a reason or an example — even a generic one.
