CELPIP Score for Express Entry: Exact Requirements (2026)

Your CELPIP score affects two things in your Express Entry application: whether you meet the minimum for your program, and how many CRS points you earn. This page covers both — the exact minimums for FSW, CEC, and FSTP, and the CRS point values for every CELPIP level.

Language requirements are set by IRCC. Always verify current thresholds at canada.ca before submitting your application.

Minimum CELPIP scores by Express Entry program

All four language skills — Speaking, Listening, Reading, Writing — must individually meet the minimum. One skill below the threshold disqualifies the entire application from that program.

Federal Skilled Worker (FSW)

CELPIP minimum

7 in all four skills

CLB equivalent

CLB 7

CLB 7 is the hard minimum. A score of 6 in any single skill disqualifies the application regardless of other factors.

Canadian Experience Class (CEC) — NOC TEER 0 or 1

CELPIP minimum

7 in all four skills

CLB equivalent

CLB 7

Same minimum as FSW for higher-skilled occupations.

Canadian Experience Class (CEC) — NOC TEER 2 or 3

CELPIP minimum

5 in all four skills

CLB equivalent

CLB 5

Lower minimum for intermediate-level occupations. Still requires all four skills to meet the threshold.

Federal Skilled Trades (FSTP)

CELPIP minimum

Speaking 5, Listening 5, Reading 4, Writing 4

CLB equivalent

CLB 5 (Speaking/Listening), CLB 4 (Reading/Writing)

Lower language bar than FSW/CEC because trade skills are weighted more heavily.

CRS points by CELPIP score — first official language

Points below are approximate and apply to the first official language (English, if you are tested in English). The actual CRS calculation also accounts for whether your spouse is included in your application. Values are based on a single applicant with no accompanying spouse.

Spouse language bonus

If your spouse or common-law partner takes a language test, their score contributes additional CRS points to your profile — up to 20 points for strong performance in both official languages. Even a modest CLB 5 from your spouse adds 3 points per skill (12 points total), which can be the difference in a close draw.

5 things to know before your CELPIP test

Every CELPIP level above 7 adds significant CRS points

The jump from CELPIP 7 to CELPIP 9 adds 56 CRS points (from ~68 to ~124). That is roughly equivalent to gaining two additional years of Canadian work experience or having a sibling in Canada. Re-taking CELPIP to improve from 7 to 9 is one of the highest-ROI actions an Express Entry applicant can take.

All four skills must clear the minimum — one weak skill can block the whole application

A score of 12, 12, 12, 6 does not meet the FSW minimum. You need every single skill at or above CLB 7. Many applicants have one weak skill — usually Writing or Speaking. Identify it on your score report and target it specifically in your retake preparation.

Include your spouse's CELPIP score if it improves your profile

If your spouse or common-law partner tests in either English or French, their language score contributes up to 20 additional CRS points (CLB 9+ in all four skills). This is separate from the main applicant's score. If your spouse's English is strong, their CELPIP score may add more CRS points than any other single action available.

CLB 9 in all four skills is the threshold for maximum language points

The CRS point difference between CLB 9 and CLB 10 is zero for most applicants — both earn the maximum 34 points per skill. Pushing from CELPIP 9 to CELPIP 10 does not increase your language CRS. The key thresholds are: 7 (meet minimum), 9 (max points). Anything above 9 has diminishing returns for CRS purposes.

Score validity is 2 years — time your CELPIP to your expected ITA

Your CELPIP score is valid for two years from the test date. If you take CELPIP in January 2025 and receive your Invitation to Apply (ITA) in December 2026, your score will have expired. Plan your test date to expire after your expected ITA window. For most applicants in competitive CRS ranges, the ITA comes within 12–18 months of entering the pool.

FAQ

Do I need to take CELPIP General or CELPIP General LS for Express Entry?

You must take CELPIP General (which includes all four skills: Reading, Listening, Writing, and Speaking). CELPIP General LS only covers Listening and Speaking and is not accepted for Express Entry immigration applications.

Can I use IELTS for some skills and CELPIP for others?

No. You must use a single approved test for all four language skills in one Express Entry application. You cannot mix CELPIP and IELTS scores.

What if I took IELTS previously — can I switch to CELPIP?

Yes. You can update your Express Entry profile with a new CELPIP test result at any time, as long as the score is not expired. Many applicants retake in CELPIP after a lower IELTS result because CELPIP's computer-based format suits them better.

Is CELPIP 9 in all skills always enough for a competitive profile?

Language alone does not determine your CRS score — work experience, education, age, and job offers all contribute. A CELPIP 9 earns maximum language points, which puts your language section at its best possible contribution. Whether your overall CRS is competitive depends on your full profile.

Does the province matter for CELPIP score requirements?

For federal Express Entry draws, the requirements are the same regardless of province. If you are applying through a Provincial Nominee Program (PNP), the language requirements may differ by province and stream — sometimes lower, sometimes higher. See the province-by-province guide for details.
