CELPIP vs PTE: Which Should You Choose?

If your goal is Canadian permanent residency, there is one answer: take CELPIP. PTE Academic is not accepted by IRCC for Express Entry, PNP, or any other Canadian PR stream. This page explains why — and when PTE does make sense.

Important: PTE Academic is NOT accepted by IRCC for Canadian permanent residency applications. If Canadian PR is your goal, you must take CELPIP General or IELTS General Training.

What PTE and CELPIP are actually accepted for

PTE is not accepted for Express Entry, PNP, or Canadian PR

IRCC (Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada) accepts only two English language tests for permanent residency applications through Express Entry, Provincial Nominee Programs, and other PR streams: CELPIP General and IELTS General Training. PTE Academic does not appear on IRCC's list of approved language tests for immigration purposes. Submitting a PTE score to IRCC for a PR application is not possible.

PTE is accepted for Australian and UK immigration

Pearson Test of English Academic is widely accepted by the Australian Department of Home Affairs (for skilled migration) and UK Visas and Immigration. If your immigration plans include Australia or the UK as a primary or backup destination, PTE is a legitimate and frequently used option.

PTE is widely accepted for university admissions

Thousands of universities globally — including many in Canada — accept PTE for admissions. If you are applying for a Canadian study permit alongside an immigration pathway, PTE may satisfy the university's language requirement even though it cannot be used for the immigration application itself.

Choose PTE if…

  • ·

Your immigration target is Australia or the UK, not Canada.

  • ·

You are applying to a Canadian university that accepts PTE for admissions (not for the study permit — check IRCC for that).

  • ·

You need an English certification for employment purposes only, and your employer accepts PTE.

  • ·

You have already taken PTE and need to decide whether to also take CELPIP for a parallel Canadian PR application.

Choose CELPIP if…

  • You are applying for Canadian permanent residency through any Express Entry program (FSW, CEC, FSTP).

  • You are applying through a Provincial Nominee Program (PNP).

  • You are applying for Canadian citizenship and need to demonstrate English language ability.

  • You live or work in Canada and the Canadian accent advantage in the Listening section applies to you.

  • You want a direct CLB score without conversion tables — CELPIP 7 = CLB 7, with no lookup required.

FAQ

Can I take both PTE and CELPIP and choose which to submit?

You can take both tests, but for any IRCC immigration application, only CELPIP General (or IELTS General Training) is accepted. Your PTE score cannot be submitted in place of or alongside a CELPIP score for PR purposes. You would take PTE for a non-Canadian application and CELPIP for the Canadian one.

Is PTE easier than CELPIP?

Difficulty is subjective and depends on the individual test-taker. PTE's AI scoring removes the variability of human raters, which some find more predictable. CELPIP's Canadian accent in Listening is familiar to people in Canada but may require adjustment for international applicants. Neither test is objectively easier — the right choice depends on your familiarity with each format and your specific goals.

Does PTE have a CLB equivalent?

IRCC does not publish a CLB conversion for PTE because PTE is not an approved test for PR applications. CLB conversions exist only for CELPIP and IELTS.

Can I use my PTE score to apply for a Canadian study permit?

This depends on the specific institution. Many Canadian universities accept PTE for admissions. However, the study permit itself (issued by IRCC) requires a different process — typically the institution's acceptance letter is sufficient. PTE is not used directly on the IRCC study permit application form in the same way CELPIP is used for PR.
