CELPIP Exam Format 2026 — Current Structure Explained

Last updated: June 2026

The CELPIP General exam has four sections: Listening (~47–55 min), Reading (~55–60 min), Writing (~53 min), and Speaking (~15–20 min). Each section is scored on a 1–12 scale directly equivalent to CLB 1–12. The core format has been stable for several years. Always confirm current timing and question counts at celpip.ca before your test.

A common concern among test-takers: prep materials found online describe formats that may be outdated. This page covers the current CELPIP General structure as of 2026 and clarifies which elements are stable versus what to verify directly with Paragon.

Current CELPIP General format — section by section

Listening

47–55 minutes
PartTypeQuestionsFormat
Part 1Listening to a Problem Conversation5Audio dialogue — customer service, everyday problem scenario. Multiple-choice.
Part 2Listening to a Daily Life Conversation5Short two-speaker dialogue — social situation. Multiple-choice.
Part 3Listening to a News Item6News broadcast-style audio. Multiple-choice.
Part 4Listening to a Discussion8Multi-speaker discussion — workplace or community meeting. Multiple-choice. Most test-takers find this the hardest part.
Part 5Listening to a Conversation for Information8Informal conversation for practical information extraction. Multiple-choice.
Part 6Listening to Viewpoints10Long single-speaker monologue — lecture, presentation, or opinion piece. Multiple-choice. Audio plays once, longest component.
Note

All audio plays once — there is no replay. The only exception is Part 1, where a brief excerpt may play twice. Note-taking is permitted and strongly recommended for Parts 4 and 6.

Reading

55–60 minutes
PartTypeQuestionsFormat
Part 1Reading Correspondence11Long email, letter, or memo. Multiple-choice. Tests direct and inferential comprehension.
Part 2Reading to Apply a Skill8Instructions, map, timetable, or form with supporting text. Match information correctly. Multiple-choice.
Part 3Reading for Information11Two informational texts (article, report, reference text). Questions may cross between the two texts. Multiple-choice.
Part 4Reading for Viewpoints10Four short opinion texts on a single topic (e.g. forum posts, letters to the editor). Identify which author holds which view. Multiple-choice.
Note

Time management is the most common challenge. Most applicants cannot re-read passages at natural speed and answer all questions. Practise scanning, not reading cover-to-cover.

Writing

53 minutes total
PartTypeFormat
Task 1Writing an EmailWrite a formal or semi-formal email responding to a scenario. Three bullet points must be addressed. 27 minutes. 150–200 words.
Task 2Responding to Survey QuestionsWrite an opinion response to a survey-style question (agree/disagree, choose an option, or multi-part). 26 minutes. 150–200 words.
Note

Both tasks are typed. Human raters assess Content/Coherence, Lexical Range, and Language Conventions. Task 1 and Task 2 are scored independently — a strong Task 1 does not offset a weak Task 2.

Speaking

15–20 minutes
PartTypeFormat
Task 1Giving AdviceGive advice based on a described situation. 30 seconds to respond.
Task 2Talking About a Personal ExperienceDescribe a personal experience related to a topic. 60 seconds.
Task 3Describing a SceneDescribe a photograph in detail. 60 seconds.
Task 4Making PredictionsLook at two images and predict what will happen next. 60 seconds.
Task 5Comparing and PersuadingTwo images — compare them and recommend one, with reasons. 60 seconds.
Task 6Dealing With a Difficult SituationDescribe how you would handle a challenging scenario, directed at a specific person. 60 seconds.
Task 7Expressing OpinionsGive and defend an opinion on a social topic. 90 seconds.
Task 8Describing an Unusual SituationDescribe what you would do in an unusual or unexpected scenario. 90 seconds.
Note

All responses are recorded. No live examiner evaluates you in real time. You receive a preparation countdown before each task. There is no re-recording — your first response is your submitted response.

What is stable vs. what to verify

What has stayed the same

The 1–12 scoring scale per skill, directly equivalent to CLB 1–12
The four sections: Listening, Reading, Writing, Speaking
The general task types within each section
Acceptance by IRCC for Express Entry, PNP, and other immigration streams
Score validity: 2 years from test date
Delivery at approved Paragon Testing Enterprises test centres
Computer-based format with typed writing and microphone speaking

What to verify directly with Paragon

Exact timing per section — minor adjustments have occurred and the official celpip.ca timing is authoritative
Precise question count per part — check your official practice test for current numbers
Any accommodation or accessibility policy updates
International test centre availability — locations change periodically
Fee amounts — test and rescoring fees are updated by Paragon and should be confirmed at celpip.ca before booking

What format changes mean for preparation

Does the format change affect how I should prepare?

No — the core preparation approach remains valid regardless of minor format adjustments. Master the task types as they currently exist, practise under timed conditions using official practice materials, and focus on your weakest section. Official practice tests from celpip.ca are the single most accurate preparation material because they are updated by Paragon.

Should I trust older CELPIP prep books?

Use caution with prep materials published before 2022. The core question types are stable, but specific instructions, timing, and interface details may reflect an older version of the test. Official practice tests from celpip.ca always reflect the current format.

How often does CELPIP change its format?

CELPIP's core format — four sections, the same task types, 1–12 scoring — has been stable for many years. Paragon occasionally adjusts timing, question counts, or interface details. Major structural changes are announced on celpip.ca. The test you practise on using official materials will match the test you sit.
